Anatomy and Histophysiological Changes in Pituitary of Calotes versicolor During Breeding and Nonbreeding Seasons International Journal of Morphology
Malashetty,Vijaykumar B; Sonar,A; Patil,Saraswati B.
Calotes versicolor, collected during peak breeding and nonbreeding season were used for the study of anatomy and histophysiology of pituitary gland. In C. versicolor the pituitary gland is small compact mass attached to the hypothalamus by a delicate stalk. It is of two basic units, adenohypophysis and neurohypophysis. The adenohypophysis includes pars distalis (PD) and pars intermedia (PI). The pars tuberalis (PT) which is usually reduced in reptiles, is absent in C. versicolor. The neurohypophysis is composed of median eminence (MI) and neural lobe or pars nervosa (PN). The anterior PD is rich acidophils than the posterior PD during breeding season. These cells are differentiated as A1 and A2 cells. The A1 cells are erythrosinophilic and stained purple...

Aversive stimulation during the stress-hyporesponsive period does not affect the number of corticotroph cells in neonatal male rats BJMBR
Aguiar,C.E.; Cadore,L.P.; Padoin,M.J.; Barbosa-Coutinho,L.M.; Lucion,A.B..
Immunohistochemistry was used to evaluate the effects of neonatal handling and aversive stimulation during the first 10 days of life on the number of corticotrophs in the anterior lobe of the pituitary of 11-day-old male Wistar rats. Since adult rats handled during infancy respond with reduced corticosterone secretion in response to stressors and with less behavior inhibition in novel environments, we assumed that neonatal stimulation could affect pituitary morphology during this critical period of cell differentiation. Three groups of animals were studied: intact (no manipulation, N = 5), handled (N = 5) and stimulated (submitted to 3 different aversive stimuli, N = 5). The percentage of ACTH-immunoreactive cells in the anterior lobe of the pituitary...

ESTs and putative line-specific (broiler and layer) SNPs identified in genes expressed in Gallus gallus pituitary and hypothalamus Genet. Mol. Biol.
Cassoli,Clarissa Sanches da Silva; Jorge,Erika Cirstina; Patrício,Mateus; Alves,Helena Javiel; Almeida,Erik Amazonas de; Ledur,Mônica Corrêa; Coutinho,Luiz Lehmann.
Brazilian poultry industry has reached a high level of development in both meat and egg production as a result of constant technological modernization. Further improvements can be achieved through genomics, but before this can be accomplished, a better understanding of gene expression profiles and nucleotide polymorphisms is necessary. Since animal physiology is directly or indirectly controlled by the pituitary and hypothalamus, the aim of the present work was to identify and analyze genes expressed in these tissues in chicken lines with different growth potential. Two pituitary and hypothalamus cDNA libraries from 21 day broiler (TT) and layer (CC) chickens lines were constructed and allowed identification of 3,074 unique sequences and 77 single...

Expression of p53 protein in pituitary adenomas BJMBR
Oliveira,M.C.; Marroni,C.P.; Pizarro,C.B.; Pereira-Lima,J.F.; Barbosa-Coutinho,L.M.; Ferreira,N.P..
Inactivating mutations of TP53, a tumor suppressor gene, are associated with abnormal cell proliferation. Although p53 expression is common in many human malignancies, p53 protein has seldom been evaluated in pituitary tumors. When detected, the percentage of p53-positive cells is low, and, in general, it is exclusive for invasive lesions. The aim of the present study was to use immunohistochemistry to determine the presence of p53 protein in pituitary adenomas from tumor samples of 163 surgeries performed in 148 patients (40% male, 60% female). In 35% of the cases the adenoma was nonfunctional, while in the others it was associated with PRL, GH and/or ACTH endocrine hypersecretion syndrome. Macroadenomas were observed in 83.2% of the cases with available...

Histological Seasonal Changes in Ovaries of Spotted Tinamous (Nothura maculosa Tinamidae, Temminck, 1815) Related to Gonadotrope Population International Journal of Morphology
Claver,Juan; Rosa,Juan M; Lombardo,Daniel M; Soñez,María C.
Nothura maculosa is a South American Tinamidae with a marked seasonal reproductive pattern. This work describes ovarían seasonal changes in this species related to gonadotrope (GTHs) population. Ovary and pituitary samples were collected monthly from adult birds during four annual periods. They were fixed in Bouin's solution and processed for light microscopy. The data of post-fixation gonadal weight were analysed using STATISTIX 4.0. Histological sections of the ovaries were stained with H/E, PAS and Goldner-Masson trichrome. Single and double immunostaining were applied on pituitary sections with anti-chicken-FSH and anti-chicken-LH antibodies. The samples were analysed in quarterly periods of the year, Pl: March-May (resting stage); P2: June-August...

In situ hybridization of somatolactin transcripts in the pituitary glands from acclimatized carp (Cyprinus carpio) Biol. Res.
LÓPEZ,MAURICIO; FIGUEROA,JAIME; KAUSEL,GUDRUN; VERA,MARÍA INÉS; KRAUSKOPF,MANUEL.
We isolated and cloned a carp somatolactin SL DNA fragment, of which 78% of the nucleotides were identical to the corresponding salmon SL sequence. The results obtained upon Northern blot hybridization of carp pituitary RNA allowed the identification of two transcripts as described for other fish. When the content of SL transcripts in pituitary sections from summer- and winter- acclimatized carp was quantified by in situ hybridization assays, we found no significant differences between the two seasons. In salmonids, plasma SL reaches higher levels in summer than in winter in synchrony with the water temperature cycle; in the eurythermal carp, however, the complex adaptive responses imposed by seasonal environmental changes do not seem to include the...

Methylmercury inhibits prolactin release in a cell line of pituitary origin BJMBR
Maués,L.A.L.; Macchi,B.M.; Crespo-López,M.E.; Nasciutti,L.E.; Picanço-Diniz,D.L.W.; Antunes-Rodrigues,J.; Nascimento,J.L.M. do.
Heavy metals, such as methylmercury, are key environmental pollutants that easily reach human beings by bioaccumulation through the food chain. Several reports have demonstrated that endocrine organs, and especially the pituitary gland, are potential targets for mercury accumulation; however, the effects on the regulation of hormonal release are unclear. It has been suggested that serum prolactin could represent a biomarker of heavy metal exposure. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of methylmercury on prolactin release and the role of the nitrergic system using prolactin secretory cells (the mammosomatotroph cell line, GH3B6). Exposure to methylmercury (0-100 μM) was cytotoxic in a time- and concentration-dependent manner, with an LC50...

Pituitary-thyroid axis in short- and long-term experimental diabetes mellitus BJMBR
Short-term experimental diabetes mellitus (DM) produces a significant decrease in serum thyroid hormones, a decreased or normal serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and a reduction in hepatic and renal T4-5'-deiodination. However, little is known about the effects of chronic diabetes mellitus on the pituitary-thyroid axis function. We evaluated the changes induced by very short-term (6 days), short-term (15 days) and chronic (6 months) streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus in 3-month old female Dutch-Miranda rat serum T4, serum TSH and T4-5'-deiodinase activity in the thyroid and pituitary glands. Serum hormones were determined by specific radioimmunoassays. Iodothyronine-5'-deiodinase activities were assayed in the thyroid and pituitary microsomal...

Prolactin induces adrenal hypertrophy BJMBR
Silva,E.J.; Felicio,L.F.; Nasello,A.G.; Zaidan-Dagli,M.; Anselmo-Franci,J.A..
Although adrenocorticotropic hormone is generally considered to play a major role in the regulation of adrenal glucocorticoid secretion, several reports have suggested that other pituitary hormones (e.g., prolactin) also play a significant role in the regulation of adrenal function. The aim of the present study was to measure the adrenocortical cell area and to determine the effects of the transition from the prepubertal to the postpubertal period on the hyperprolactinemic state induced by domperidone (4.0 mg kg-1 day-1, sc). In hyperprolactinemic adult and young rats, the adrenals were heavier, as determined at necropsy, than in the respective controls: adults (30 days: 0.16 ± 0.008 and 0.11 ± 0.007; 46 days: 0.17 ± 0.006 and 0.12 ± 0.008, and 61 days:...

Studies on the reproductive and developmental biology of Cichlasoma dimerus (Percifomes, Cichlidae) Biocell
Pandolfi,Matías; Cánepa,Maximiliano M.; Meijide,Fernando J.; Alonso,Felipe; Rey Vázquez,Graciela; Maggese,M. Cristina; Vissio,Paula G..
Many characteristics of the South American teleost fish Cichlasoma dimerus (body size, easy breeding, undemanding maintenance) make it amenable to laboratory studies. In the last years, many of the fundamental aspects of its reproductive and developmental biology have been addressed in our laboratory. Rather recently, the immunohistochemical localization of pituitary hormones involved in reproduction and in background color adaptation has been described in both adult and developing individuals, and the role of FSH in ovarian differentiation has been established. These findings have been correlated with mapping of some of their brain-derived controlling hormones. The latter include brain-derived gonadotropins which were shown to be active in vitro in the...

Urophysial and pituitary extracts for spawning induction in teleosts Ciência Rural
Behr,Everton Rodolfo; Baldisserotto,Bernardo; Parra,Walter Garcia; Brandão,Deodoro Atlante; Herke,Zolst.
Several studies have suggested that the caudal neurosecretory system could act on fish reproduction. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of urophysial extract (UE) and carp pituitary homogenate (CPH) on the induction of spawning in Hoplias malabaricus, Rhamdia quelen and Cyprinus carpio. The amount of UE injected was 1.0 to 3.0mg/kg L.W. (single dose) and CPH 3.0 to 4.0mg/kg L.W. (two doses). The application of UE had no effect on spawning induction, while CPH improved spawning of all studied species.
